Robinia pseudoacacia, Wattle
Acacia, known in Bulgaria as salkam, is a fast-growing deciduous tree from the legume family (Fabaceae). The most widespread species in the country is Robinia pseudoacacia, also known as black locust or white acacia. The plant is characterized by high durability and excellent adaptability to various climatic and soil conditions.
Acacia reaches a height of 15 to 25 meters, forming a broad crown and a deep root system. Its leaves are compound and pinnate, light green in color, while the flowers are white, fragrant, and arranged in hanging clusters. Flowering usually occurs in May and June, making the plant an extremely valuable honey source.
Acacia also has significant ecological importance – it improves soil fertility through nitrogen fixation and is often used for afforestation and stabilization of eroded areas.
