Bougainvillea x Specto-Glabra

Bougainvillea X spectro-glabra

This type of bougainvillea is more cold-resistant than other types. The branches of old plants are damaged at temperatures of about -5°C, and the main stem of old plants can survive short-term frosts down to -10°C, but only if there are no frosty days with maximum temperatures below 0°C.

Young plants must be protected from any temperatures below 0°C!

An old bougainvillea of this type grows in Asenovgrad, Bulgaria (zone 8b/9a) which has been planted outside in the ground for about 20 years. It is planted next to a retaining wall and is covered with plastic in the winter, without heating. So far, it has survived all the cold winters, and in recent years it has wintered almost without any protection, with only the main stem remaining alive. The stem is now about 25 cm in diameter. During the season, the plant grows about 5 meters high and blooms from June to December.

This type of bougainvillea is suitable for selected microclimates along the sea or in sheltered places in Southern Bulgaria. In Northern Bulgaria it has no chance unless it is well protected every winter.
